About this project

When I was in junior high, I wanted to be Sting, Let me be clear, not be "like" him, have his life, sing, play like or even look like him. I actually wanted to BE him in like a Warren Beatty - Heaven Can Wait - Being John Malkovich kind of way. I realize of course that kind of thinking was just childish immaturity and frankly a bit deranged, because now as a middle aged adult I want to be Dave Grohl.

With that as the backdrop when Will told me about his friend Alan Smyth, working with the Saving Innocence Project we thought that this particular topic needs more male allies, that victims advocating for themselves may not speak deeply enough to the underlying cultural perceptions and norms that directly and indirectly enable this kind of abuse to germinate and fester. Please take a moment to just read about the Saving Innocence Project.

We need guy's-guys to think about and give voice to the issue sex trafficking with the kind of sober realism we give to the attributes of a four barrel carburetor yet with the humanity of Brave Heart, er..somethin. What genre of music could be more guy's-guy than the dissociated teenage grandson of classic rock. AKA "Dad-Rock" this highly derivative alternative hard post-grunge pop rock is the sound of contemporary quiescent impotent rage and disillusionment.  Since we were already speaking predominantly to men about the plight of young women and girls in-prisoned in such a life, we dabbled in themes that also speak to the challenges young men are facing in society today as well.  So that is the content bingo card if you want to play along.

The Notes

Once we settled on the genre for The Saving Innocence Project I did my usual and made a playlist of some of my favorites from this space on which to go to school, Foo Fighters, Green Day, Audio Slave, STP, Velvet Revolver, Rival Son, Gojira, Burst, Queens of the Stone Age and so on.  With one clear source of inspiration or feeble blatant rip off, whichever you prefer, of Lyle Workman's Titans of Metal because I always like to put at least one instrumental on there.

Will and I
bandied about topics and stories we want to tell. As is the norm for us usually the music came first but not always.  Not having deep roots in this style nor primarily being a guitar player I went about replacing all the ideas in my head I would have used for keys and horns and the like and just made them into yet more guitars. I found it difficult to have too many.

A full break down of how the recording was done and the toys we used, from apps to amps is available on the Liner Notes page.  If you have more questions feel free to send us an email.
